Finding the Science Behind the Feel
Nico Smutylo -Founder
Some designers focus on what a room looks like. I've always been more interested in what a room does.
My path into design wasn't straightforward. I left design school to pursue music, only to realize I couldn't shake my love for interiors. When I returned, I knew my path would look different. There would be no shortcuts. If I wanted to become the designer I hoped to be, I would have to work for it.
And I did.
Throughout my career, I've always been the person asking questions. What makes one design decision better than another? And is there a deeper reason behind good design than personal taste?
While working in residential design, I became fascinated by the thinking behind great interiors. Not trends or styling, but the principles behind them. I wanted to understand why certain design choices consistently led to better outcomes.
At the same time, I noticed how often good design was misunderstood. People saw it as personal taste, decoration, or something reserved for a certain type of home. Yet I could see the impact our environments were having on how we lived every day.
More than fifteen years ago, I wrote a note in my journal:
"Study how design affects the brain and our emotions."
I've been following that thread ever since.
Then life gave me a lesson of its own.
During my second maternity leave, my family unexpectedly lost our rental home. What was supposed to be a short stay with family turned into more than ten months without a place of our own.
For the first time in my life, I understood what it felt like to live without a space that reflected me.
That experience reinforced something I had always believed: our homes shape far more than how a room looks. They influence how we feel, how we function, and who we become.
That's why I created Paro.
To bridge the gap between great design and everyday life. To help people understand not only what to do in their homes, but why it matters.
Because the best interiors don't simply reflect a life lived. They help create the life that's still ahead.
